FAQ
Where is it 5 o'clock right now?
The list above shows every city currently in the 5 PM hour, with its local time and UTC offset, and refreshes every minute. Since time zones cover the whole globe, there is nearly always somewhere in that hour.
Where does the phrase "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" come from?
It is an old excuse for an early drink, made famous by the 2003 Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett song of the same name. The joke works because 5 PM, the traditional end of the workday, is always happening in some time zone.
Is it ever not 5 PM anywhere?
For one hour a day, yes. Time zone offsets run from UTC-12 to UTC+14, which covers 26 of the 27 hourly slots. The gap is 2:00 to 3:00 UTC: UTC+14 (Kiritimati) has already reached 4 PM and nowhere is far enough ahead to be at 5 PM yet. The rest of the day some zone is always in the 5 PM hour, though sometimes only a remote island, and the page says so when that happens.
Why do some cities show a half hour offset?
Places such as India, Iran, and parts of Australia use offsets like UTC+5:30 or UTC+9:30. They still have a full 5 PM hour, it just starts halfway through a UTC hour.
